Nixon resigns on August 9, 1974 and Gerald Ford becomes the first non-elected president in history. North Vietnam launched their final campaign against South Vietnam and Saigon falls on April 30, 1975. The United States must deal with the after effects of the war at home, including providing for veterans and understanding the widespread mistrust of the federal government. The new rise of conservatism was the long lasting result of the Vietnam War, as Reagan and Bush came into office. This general feeling has spread into the 21st century, characterized by desires of small government and less regulation.
