John F. Kennedy was elected president in 1960, just as the situation in Vietnam was beginning to escalate. Ngo Dinh Diem was already in power, but opposed by many South Vietnamese. JFK encouraged Diem to partake in political reforms to reduce corruption, all while the United States sent relief to the country.
